Mentha suaveolens also known as Woolly Mint or Round leaved Mint both of these names are descriptive as the leaves are much rounder than Spearmint and they are hairy.

Apple MintThe leaves smell delicious and as you probably know this is a herb prized for it’s scent and flavour. An Β ingredient of mint sauces and jelly it is also used to make mint tea.

In the process of identifying this plant I was sent out to gather samples and to describe the smell.

Apple MintDoesn’t that smell good?

The Latin name Mentha comes from Greek mythology. Minthe was a nymph. She was about to seduce the God Hades (of all people), she had in turn been seduced by his fast car, when Persephone caught her and turned her into a flower. Now she seduces everyone.

  1. I scratched the screen as hard as I could and all I got was the smell of Parsley, Dukka and Balsamic Vinegar (from my dinner)????

I’m a big lover of mint. Use it nearly every week. Also in home-made mint sauce with roast lamb – yum! I think my Mint plant is Mentha spicata though (Spearmint).

  2. I had a pumpkin, mint and pine nut dip yesterday. Yummy. Luckily I checked for added insect protein before consuming. No sting in the tail. And nobody photographed me eating. Phew.

  3. Your post made me giggle. I love mint of all kinds though I had to get rid of my peppermint in the herb garden as it was even thuggier than any of the others. We have mints in the ditches and pond but I have no idea which they are. I need an expert like you to visit!

  4. Another good-smelling stuff. I taught my granddaughter about mint when she was 2. She still remembers the lessons and loves to pick the leaves in their backyard and bring home.
