Pick Puck or Pickle

Nah, Pickle isn’t an option.

It has been a month since we had a proper Robin update, the last one was Valentine’s Day. I asked you for suggestions for a name and said that when I got him eating out of my hand we would have a poll to choose the best one.

Today we raised the bar (by about two and a half feet) and he needs a name. Bear in mind that this is an important decision because after three months of hard taming, he is family now and he will be appearing here, as much a part of my day as walking the Dog.

If anybody has got Facebook then I ask that you just ignore any name suggestions that Fizz may post. I am not going to call him Flighty or Misfit. They will be chums.

Today started just as any other. He waits outside of my door for me to open up and start feeding him, that is usually about six thirty at this time of year.

European RobinHe has been eating out of my hand for a couple of weeks but he likes to eat at ground level and that involves me getting on my knees and stretching my arm as far as I can.

I feel like an idiot.

European RobinI have been trying to get him to approach me from the hand rail and today he accepted that, I haven’t had to get on my knees since.

You can see that he wants this worm.

European RobinYou big, brave, little bird.

European RobinAs soon as he had done it once that was it, problem solved.

European RobinAll of the pictures in this post were taken today, he is a hungry little bird.

European RobinNow he needs a name. The names on my list were suggested by you after my February 14th post, except for the last two, I decided to allow Fizz a little input. The poll is open for one week and then we will know who he is.

He is getting very confident and cheeky and I do like a rude bird. He has given me a lot of pleasure today and he will do so tomorrow as well.

European RobinI know that there are people who would prefer it if he was  a vegetarian. I am feeding him live Wax Worms. It is just necessary at the moment to win his confidence. His natural diet is live insects and he would eat them anyway, by feeding him commercially grown animals I am saving the lives of hundreds of valuable native insects. I will talk to him about lifestyle options when we know each other better and probably after the chicks are fledged.

The other thing is  that today was just a lousy day for photography. I thought that if I left this post a couple more days then I would get much better pictures but the post is about today.

I will do the better pictures, I will do both. When the sun shines I will have all of the opportunity in the world and he will sparkle.

      1. Phew! that was close. Christopher is added to the poll. Thank you Ibeth for a brilliant and obvious suggestion but you did cut that a bit fine 🙂

    1. Thank you Joy 🙂 I would say that you have no idea but you probably do, it is just an expression. His feet feel extremely delicate, in the excitement of the moment it is hard to notice that he has any weight at all but he does have a touch. I am wondering if he knows me or has just learned to eat off Humans. It would be wonderful to share this experience. My Landlady, Fizz’s mum is in her eighties, I am not sure that she could get up my steps but she loves Robins. It would be such a nice thing if I could put one in her hand. A thousand likes 🙂

    1. Thank you Hien 🙂 I don’t take it for granted. It took three months to tame this bird and there has never been a time in my life before when I could have given that much time to a small animal. It is a gift and I mean a present not a talent. I am thankful for the presents I am given.

  1. Good, patient and gentle taming, Colin. Such an exciting thing to witness. Regardless of the poll results, make sure you choose a name you like since he is essentially your little friend. 🙂 LOVE this post!

    1. Thank you Eliza 🙂 I really don’t mind what his name is, I just want to know it. I would ask him but although I can speak fluent Robin, I don’t understand a word that I say 🙂 I didn’t choose Fizz, I just met her.

    1. Thank you Georgina 🙂 Well it has taken me ages to tame this one, I started this in December. Also there is a downside to having a tame Robin, he is very demanding. Every time I open my door he comes to me and that is great if I am looking for him but I can’t get out of my flat now. I only have one door. Also he is expensive. It costs about ten pounds for a box of 250 worms, I have to get them mail order and he eats about 25 a day at the moment and he is still a bit shy. Perhaps it is sometimes best to just talk to them 🙂

  2. Such a wonderful post with wonderful pictures. Even if you don’t think they sparkle yet, you’re still making me smile! Looking forward to more adventures with a Robin-with-a_name soon….

  3. Wow, well done, and for photographing him at the same time! I never had any doubt that you would get him to come to you! Are you sure it’s a male? (I may have missed a post if you explained this earlier, so apologies!) – but I know it’s quite hard to tell.

    1. Thank you Jo 🙂 The sexes look the same but they don’t always behave the same. This bird always takes two worms, he eats the first and then flies off with the second. Just once I was very surprised to see him a good minute after he had left and he still had the worm in his beak, he was singing loudly despite the impediment. Another Robin appeared and they flew off under a vehicle together. I think that he gave her the worm and that would be courtship and it would make him male.

If he lays an egg in a month or two I will reassess the situation.

A female would be better for me because I really want to play a part in raising the brood. I have watched Robins taking their newly fledged chicks to the bird feeder and teaching them how to get food. If the bird is confident with me then I don’t see why he/she shouldn’t bring the chicks to me for worms and I would have a family of birds. Wow 🙂

      1. BTW. A little extra information.I think that I know where they will nest. There is an outbuilding where we keep the Sheep feed that I keep seeing him going in and out of. I haven’t investigated yet in case this is a sensitive time when they might judge how safe it is but you know me. I am a tricky sort of fellow with trail cameras and all sorts, if I can find the nest then I will film them and that would be double cool 🙂

  4. You did it! And we knew you would, and I love your comments. You do like a rude bird, cheeky, etc. What a wonderful experience it must be for you, having him confident to sit on your hand and eat. This is great.

  5. Oh, he is so cute! I love him! To me he is just Red. I like simple names. But I felt it was too simple to suggest, so I didn’t. But to me he will always just be Red. 🙂 🙂 🙂 I think you must have a very calm and beautiful energy since all the animals love you so much 🙂 I have an eagle here who comes to me when I sit on my balcony, but I am afraid of him, he screams so loudly and puts out his claws, I am afraid he will attack me, so when he comes too close I run into the house.

      1. Oh, no not baby animals!! Maybe he thinks I look like a lamb with my blond hair! Maybe that is why is hovering over me. Iiiiiiiik!!!! Yes, stick to song birds, that is better! 🙂 🙂

  6. I knew you would complete the wonder and have a nature friend. Your new friend, hopefully, will bear the name Christopher, after Christopher Robin. Here is a lovely quote I copied: (Yes, I voted)
“If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.”
    ― A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
The photos are really heartwarming to see. Hope Fizz takes to your new friend.
I am truly happy you can say, “Mission accomplished.”

    1. Thank you Ettel 🙂 Christopher is a lovely name, it seems to be topping the poll at the moment and we can shorten it to Christy if he lays an egg later. He is getting bolder every day and I am wondering how cheeky he will be in a month or two. I have a feeling that he will just come into my flat and help himself. I need the weather to get a little bit warmer so that I can leave my back door open, then he can come and tell me when he’s hungry 🙂

      1. Christopher/Cristy, depending on future events, seems a perfect name(s) for a cheeky little Robin.. Oh, I am so anxious to learn how your summer goes! It should be very eventful.. How happy I am for you (and your Followers).

  7. I have been puzzled as one of the beekeepers left a little bowl of live mealworms at the apiary… a week later and no birds seem to have touched them. We have a magpie and robin who regularly visit for cake crumbs and yet they have ignored the worms. I’m glad your brave little robin is more sensible.

  8. Congratulations Colin! It must be a relief to no longer be a bottom feeder (laying on the floor to feed him) 😀 Still that is quite an obligation to get up for 6 am feedings, not to mention the price of worms these days 🙂 The post delivery person must be wondering about you 😉 Looking forward to more wormy chapters of Mr Robin and his brood!

    1. Thank you Stephanie 🙂 I do like sleeping but I hate to waste the night. If I can’t be outside then I am happy to be on a farm with the windows open, listening to Owls and the Robin starts to sing some time before dawn. I can’t wait for the Swallows to come back and fill my flat with their songs 🙂

  9. One of my favorite pictures of my mom is of her feeding a hummingbird with sugar water in Jamaica back in the 70’s. She had had a stroke and only had one hand but she figured out how to hold the water so that the hummingbird could come to her. The look on her face is amazing. There is something so breathtaking about being that close to a wild animal no matter what the size.

    1. Thank you Virginia 🙂 That’s a lovely memory. I was just standing outside talking to my landlord and the Robin saw me and tried to approach. He couldn’t quite get up the courage to approach two people, especially as my friend hadn’t noticed the bird and was talking quite loudly but the bird made about five attempts to get to me. It is going to be easy to teach him to come to two people and then I can share him and that will be nice 🙂

  10. So much patience involved in this whole process. Congratulations on gaining the robin’s trust. I am a little envious actually but glad you have a new member of the family to keep you company. 🙂

The Robins here are loud, messy and crazy, each year there is one who keeps flying into our living room window, and the neighbors bedroom window!
A good name for your Robin is….Robin of ..where you live!
