Lost in Space

So this is what happened. My PC wanted to update itself to Windows 8.1 and I kept saying no and then it started getting nasty, saying that if I didn’t do it today I would have to do it tomorrow.

Anyway eventually I realised that this was a really big issue for the machine and it wasn’t going to give me any peace until I gave in.

My new operating system didn’t recognise my Wi-fi adaptor and so I was “not connected to the internet” for the best part of two days while I got a new one.

Saying that I don’t like Windows 8 is about as stupid as saying that I don’t like The Black Death, I know but I especially don’t like it because I have to try and help “old people” figure out their computers and it is so different (and stupid).

This post is going to be all about relationships. Whilst my relationship with my PC has been in the gutter I have been getting it on with some new friends.

European RobinWell okay, I have been seeing this Robin for about a month now, maybe a bit longer but things are warming up.

At first I would open the door and put some food out and the bird would flit around and wait for me to go back inside before taking my offering.

Then we started talking. I came up with the idea of calling the bird. I started making a little “tsk tsk tsk” sound with the tip of my tongue, trying to call the bird to me.

I was amazed when it settled close by and started making the same call back to me. “I have taught you to talk,” I thought. The bird was mimicking me? No, the bird made the sound first and I heard and mimicked the bird.

Normally it sings and if I don’t notice straight away it shouts.

European RobinSo what has changed is that I have stopped opening the door and putting food out. First I call it, sometimes it calls me and once we are talking I put the food out and the bird comes for it.

This is really beginning to feel like a relationship and this little bird is giving me a lot of pleasure every day.

European RobinI want the bird to feed from my hand but I am not ready to go all the way yet. There is a lot of respect and building of trust in this relationship and even if we never get that far I am enjoying trying.

The reason that I give Robin updates is, if we do get it on, I don’t want people to think that there is something magic, like he is beloved of the Faeries or anything (I am) I want to show you how much time it took to build up this trust and that love works both ways, it is not easy.

The other lady that I have been getting it on with has a beautiful dusky face.

SheepThe one at the front, she has distinctive grey markings on her black face. I noticed her following me around today and I noticed her face, when I got home I looked at yesterday’s pictures and realised that she was the same one that was following me around yesterday.

Don’t underestimate the power of love and don’t underestimate stalkers either.

She is actually a very attractive Sheep and I am so tall and handsome????

It might just be cupboard love, I have to feed them hay and pellets every day, she might just be the smart one.

FizzYou have been living alone for a while now Col?

Shut up! She has got nice legs.

This is the Sheep safe in the small paddock behind the farmhouse.

Weather report:

FizzFizz has been lost in space.

Since the Snowdrops arrived Winter has been on the run. The weather has been beautiful.

FizzFizz and I have been hunting but we don’t have results to show you yet. We have set the camera in the woods.

Woods

WoodsIt is a dangerous enterprise for all concerned but we are sneaky.

There are three female Boar here. The first births are already being reported in the forest. This is dangerous for the animals if I give away their location. It is dangerous for Fizz if I make a mistake and it is dangerous for me because my camera might get stolen.

I will back off when I make that decision, right now I would like to see them. I am good and I know a lot about animals and people. Sneak, sneak.

Well I have done a lot of photographing of my Snowdrops and I haven’t really got what I want yet but I am trying.

Snowdrop

Snowdrop

SnowdropI want to be there at the birth.

This is what it is like in space.

  1. I finally gave in and said ‘yes’ to 8.1. Now my computer system is even more bossy! And while I’m ranting, I’m sick of WordPress changing perfectly good operating systems and leaving me unable to find my way around without a lot of stumbling! Love your robin

  2. Your pictures are absolutely beautiful, and it looks like I can say the same for your weather. It really is too bad that they don’t put up some laws protecting those boars, but I guess that’s just too much to ask for these days. It really is a shame. Well, good luck with the hunting, and thanks again for the great visuals, they keep giving me hope that we’ll get some of the same, and so far we have been, so here’s hoping for even more.

    1. Thanks David 🙂 In the long term they have done the Boar a favour by dispersing them. The three in this wood are well outside of the cull zone and only in danger from the locals and they probably won’t notice them. The Boar have spread widely from the forest. Normally it is the amount of available food that limits their numbers and they have high infant mortality but now they are spread thin and there should be plenty of food. A few Boar can live right amongst us and nobody will even notice. Most people don’t know that there are Badgers, Fox and Deer all around us. Unfortunately they won’t stay just a few. Boar live all over Europe and they don’t seem to cause any huge problem but England is a very small place. I think that a few years from now the Boar will be making headlines here and people will be asking, “How did they get so spread out?”

  3. I am enjoying your sweet little English Robin and your sense of humor–I was in the market for some smiles today and you stepped up to the plate… I often ‘talk’ to squirrels and they stop and stare at me with rapt attention… they’ve gotten pretty close. So close to me in fact, I was afraid they might jump on my face and bite me. We once had a very lovely and pretty-faced ewe, she had a full black face and long lovely legs. People may think that all sheep look alike, but they don’t.

    1. Thank you Joy 🙂 A few days ago I was out with Fizz when a Squirrel ran across our path and took refuge in a tree beside us, It had it’s head behind the trunk but otherwise it was perched about eighteen inches from me. I could so easily have reached out and stroked it’s tail. I know something about Squirrels though, they will definitely bite if you try to handle them 🙂

  4. Such a sweet little robin – the closest we have to this level of friendliness is the black-capped chickadee. They are fearless and can be trained to eat out of your hand, but I’ve never attempted it. I’m not one to stand out in the cold for long!

    1. Thank you Eliza 🙂 There is something that I may not have mentioned, I am a smoker and about once every hour or so I have to go and stand outside of my back door, then it is nice to have company.

    1. Thank you John 🙂 That is a very attractive little bird. It is the cheekiness of our Robin that makes it so special, there are lots of other birds that have cottoned on to the meal worms outside the back door but they won’t come near me, the Robin will come in and ransack my flat if I leave the door open.

      1. I have just been reading about your Willy Wagtail (The bird that punched your Robin on the nose). I read that it is fiercely territorial, our little Robin is a bit like that and that is probably why they are less afraid of us.

  5. Oh my, Windows 8 is a catastrophy it bugs me almost every time I sit by my computer to write or just browse. I would rather look at the cute little Robins and sheep. And sweet Fizz of course. Than staring at my screen and scratching my head over the worst operating system ever made. Speaking of contrasts 🙂 I hope you solved it.

  6. Nice pictures. Specially I appreciated the black-blue-pink forest hues. But I wouldn’t be myself if I didn’t try to correct light conditions. Sometimes weather makes tricks on us. What about the two images corrected slightly in GIMP?

    1. Thank you Przemyslaw 🙂 I am very impressed. I especially like the Robin. I have never considered using anything like Gimp but that is good and it could be very useful for me when I am trying to show some detail of a plant for instance. I will download it and have a look as soon as I have sorted out my other problems. This morning I opened up Picasa and found that all of my photographs from the last year had disappeared. I have had to uninstall it and reinstall and now it is reloading it’s data base. Should only take a few hours 🙂

  7. The open mouth robin shot is a great capture and they are all very good. I have Windows 8.1 (came with new computer) and I’m not a big fan of it. I understand you concerns with W8.1 but I think there might be a bigger concern regarding the relationship you are building with the sheep Mr. tall and handsome. Nice legs or not.

    1. Thank you David 🙂 I must admit that until yesterday she was just a face in the crowd. I need to get my pictures back from W8.1 so that I can look back and see how long this relationship has been going on.

  8. Gotta watch those computer updates. I updated mine (as my Mac told me to) and not only did it crash the system, the Apple help desk couldn’t fix it and I ended up having to get a whole new operating system and was out of touch for some days. Fortunately, I didn’t have to foot the bill, Apple covered the cost for me.

Love the images of the Robin – takes some time to build up trust with birds.

    1. Thank you Vicki 🙂 I agree. Anyone running Windows should turn the automatic update feature off. If it works then leave it alone. I turned it off on my Landlords machine but I didn’t do my own.

  9. I was given a lap-top for my birthday (beginning September) with Windows 8 and I still can’t work out how to use it properly so I am still using my over-worked and over-full net-book most of the time. Good progress report on Robin, Boars and Snowdrops. I am glad Fizz enjoys being lost in space!

    1. Thank you Clare 🙂 My Landlord was given a laptop with Windows 8 the Christmas before last, he keeps trying to give it to me. It is really rubbish. Why has the operating system got a touch screen when the laptop hasn’t? I think that they are trying to make old people obsolete.

    1. Thank you Don 🙂 Poor Fizz has been abandoned by her owners (they are on holiday) and she is getting all of my attention, except when I am feeding the other animals of course.

  10. That Robin is so pretty and so different from what we have here in the Northeast of the USA. Our robins have darker feathers and longer bodies and tails.

  11. Fizz would not be the first rocket dog. I think that was Leica or maybe Laika. The rocket was powered by Winalot, all the Soviets could afford at the time. But she may have the first tennis ball in space. The Americans took a golf ball but they didn’t have room for a net and rackets.

  12. I love robins, and sheep too! 🙂 But the Norwegian ones are cuter!! hihihihihi!! 🙂 This post reminded me of that cartoon for kids….shaun the sheep 🙂 🙂 I saw a fox yesterday!!!! Oh, and do you know the story of how the snowdrop got its green mark? it gave its color to the snow, because snow did not have any color, then the snow said that the snowdrop would be the first flower to grow in spring and it would even let it grow through the snow! That is why the snowdrop has that green mark because it gave some of its whiteness to the snow! 🙂 🙂 🙂
That is how we say in Norway 🙂

    1. Thank you Trini 🙂 That is a lovely story about the Snowdrop. Watch out for updates, the camera in the woods is really looking for Trolls, we just pretend that it is Boar and Deer.

    1. Thank you Stephanie 🙂 Nah… I am good at keeping evil at bay, Goblins and that kind of thing with my Honeysuckle and Elder and I can talk to animals but that’s about it. I can’t teach Fizz how to swim 🙂

  14. It’s so exciting how the robin has taken up with you. I can’t wait to hear that she has finally eaten out of your hand. Thanks for the photos of her. I can’t wait to use them in my designs. I know what you mean about Windows 8. I had a hard enough time learning Windows 7 and won’t update to 8 till I have to. I like things the way they are. Happy Trails!

      1. Windows 10 hasn’t been released yet. I agree about change, if Windows seven works for you, why change it? I very much doubt that Windows 10 will actually improve anything but it will be forced on us.

  15. Umm…I’m thinking this robin relationship is getting serious! I hope your sheepy stalker is not the jealous type. I’ve been butted in the rear by a very pushy sheep as I was bending over to put some grain in a container so watch out. They can get a bit dominating in a “relationship”. 🙂 A great selection of pics again. I’m glad you survived the Windows 8 monster.

It is almost like being outdoors and walking along thru the woods…..wish our computers had smell-o-works, but be grateful for what DOES work, right. Thanks for now, Colin.

    1. Thank you Georgina 🙂 Digging is all that they really do around here but in the forest people are very proud of their grass verges and everybody puts time and effort into maintaining them. You can get shot for rooting them up.

  17. You have so much going on in this fantastic post today! I love the story of the bird 😄. Such patience! My favorite picture was (either) the sunrise or sunset behind the woods. That was a stunning picture (but then sunsets and sunrises are my very favorite). I wanted to make a comment about Windows 8… I’m so glad I’m not the only person on the planet that thinks it is a difficult computer program…it drives me crazy every opportunity it gets. Thank you for such a lovely blog today…. it was really interesting. Your photography is so good!

  18. The photo of the robin singing, shouting, screaming or talking is very nice. I wish I had such a loving relationship with the crows that roost outside my window, but would I want that? 🙂

    1. Thank you 🙂 We have lots of Crows in the trees around here and they make a deafening noise but they stay out in the fields and don’t really come into the garden. It is quite impressive to walk under their trees and hear the racket that they make.
