Where’s my presents!

“Happy Birthday to me, Happy birthday to me.”

It is not your fault, I didn’t say but she knew.

FizzYou can’t give somebody “yourself” as a Birthday present. That’s not a proper present!

FizzI got up early today to get my chores done. Wash the kitchen floor, quick hoover round, get the place nice and “don’t forget to get the dog dirty.”

I’ll get my own presents.

This is one of my favourite spring flowers. Greater Stitchwort, Β Stellaria holostea. Pay attention to that Latin name and I will show you some other Stellaria in a minute.

Greater Stitchwort

Greater Stitchwort

Greater StitchwortThis beautiful flower has just five petals but each one is split to about halfway.

Stellaria holosteaObviously if there is a Greater Stitchwort then there must be a Lesser one.

Some people get confused between the species. This is the lesser one. Stellaria graminea.

Lesser StitchwortIt still only has five petals but now they are much more deeply divided and spaced apart. The flower is smaller than the Greater one.

Lesser Stitchwort

Lesser StitchwortIf there is a greater one and a lesser one then there is probably an inconsequential one too. We call it Common Chickweed.

Stellaria media.

Common ChickweedPeople call this one a weed (Bless) all of my flowers are weeds and this one is quite tiny. It still has the family resemblance and it is beautiful.

Common Chickweed

Common ChickweedWell thank you so much Fizz. That was just what I wanted, a bunch of flowers.

FizzA bit cheap though. I know you don’t got money but you could have stole some.

That is not the whole story of my Birthday.

Fizz and I went out to look at mushrooms and I found a good example of Trametes versicolour.

TurkeytailThat’s a Turkeytail Fungus.

TurkeytailI couldn’t get a decent photograph because I just couldn’t keep it still. I turned around and somebody was eating the other end of the branch!

FizzWho is raggin’ on my tree?

It wasn’t me πŸ™‚FizzI can’t believe that you would do that to me on my Birthday.

Who? What?

FizzThank you for the days.

  2. I hope you have had a very Happy Birthday today, Colin. Many Happy Returns! The Turkey-tail Fungus is aptly named. Another one I don’t believe I have ever seen before. I am so glad you like all the Stellatas – they are my favourites too.

  3. Happy Birthday! I made you a card and posted it several days ago, remember? The Happy Birthday squirrel. He knew your birthday was coming up and he didn’t want to miss it. It was just a little early. Have a blessed day, Colin!

    1. Thank you Sandi πŸ™‚ Oh yes, I loved that Squirrel and in the same post the little card with Fizz saying, “I’m sorry.” Not that she ever has anything to say sorry for, except maybe eating the trees and flowers that I am trying to photograph πŸ™‚

      1. Hi Colin. I’m so glad you liked your birthday card. The squirrel new, didn’t he? I’m just about finished with the little critters I told you I was going do. Hopefully I’ll get them posted today or tonight. I’ve had a blast making silly things using your photos of the Jew’s Ears. Happy Trails!

    1. Thank you Alastair πŸ™‚ Well, I think petals are there to guide the little insects to the honey pot. There is a huge amount of variety in just how they arrange this but I guess this is the way that works best for the Stellaria species.

  4. Sorry, a little late to the party! Happy wishes to a fellow Sagitarrian. What a wonderful gift you gave to us for your birthday πŸ˜‰ Hope that you have many more stellaria rambles to enjoy. What you have there cannot be bought, Fizz and the Forest and Forget-me-nots. (well not exactly, but it rhymes!). Cheers, Stephanie.

  5. It is not too late to wish you a Happy Birthday, I hope.
The little flower is beautiful, and your sidekick is so muddy, But she is adorable. I still believe she enjoys a mud bath.

  6. All those lovely, tiny flowers…. so pretty, creamy, pure white. Oh, and my boss said something very wise to me one time: “Never apologize for a gift.” (I was making excuses over something I had given him). If we give from the heart, that is all that matters.

  7. So let me see if I’ve got this tag right, and this is from memory: “canis lupus too bloomin familiaris”…. Not bad, I added an “n”. You’ll make a botanist out of me yet. I’ll just have to keep reading you.
