Myathropa florea is quite a pretty name, prettier than Dead Head.
These Hover Flies are called Dead Heads because the pattern on the black thorax (The first part of it’s body behind the head) is supposed to resemble a blackened skull.
These are one of the easier Hover Flies to identify. There are a lot that you just can’t get to species from a photograph, you have to chop them up and examine them with a microscope.
So . . . blondes have more flowers?

hoverflies are one of my favorite little folks, they like to come cheerfully say hello when you sit outdoors; and I’ve heard that they bravely like to pretend they’re wasps, to fool those who would like to eat them 🙂

He’s a handsome fellow. I love his yellow hair. The entire bee is magnificent! He seems to glow.

I wouldn’t mind these around here. Much nicer than vindictive wasps.

Good shots. Fascinating mouthpart – like a mini-vacuum-hoover!
