Hemp-Agrimony

Eupatorium cannabinum. A beautiful tall, pink plant that forms large stands. It is in flower now.

Hemp-AgrimonyI suppose that if you have seen this growing near to you then you will want to know, “Can I smoke it?”

No. Sorry it is a member of the Daisy family. It only got the name Hemp because the leaves resemble those of the Cannabis genus of plants (in shape)

Hemp-AgrimonyI don’t know how it came by the Agrimony part of it’s name. Agrimony is a member of the Rose family and doesn’t bear any resemblance to this plant. The name Agrimony is derived from a Greek word Argemone meaning healing to the eyes, while  in herbalism this plant is used to treat swollen feet. You can’t get much further from the eyes than that 🙂

  1. It looks a bit like Eutrochium purpureum (formerly Eupatorium purpureum) – Joe Pye Weed here in the US. Since it’s been reclassified, I guess they aren’t related.

    1. Thanks Eliza 🙂 The short answer is that they are related. They belong to the same “Tribe” Eupatorieae which is a subdivision of the family Asteraceae. Within that tribe Eupatorium and Eutrochium are closely linked.
