Eupatorium cannabinum. A beautiful tall, pink plant that forms large stands. It is in flower now.
I suppose that if you have seen this growing near to you then you will want to know, “Can I smoke it?”
No. Sorry it is a member of the Daisy family. It only got the name Hemp because the leaves resemble those of the Cannabis genus of plants (in shape)
I don’t know how it came by the Agrimony part of it’s name. Agrimony is a member of the Rose family and doesn’t bear any resemblance to this plant. The name Agrimony is derived from a Greek word Argemone meaning healing to the eyes, while in herbalism this plant is used to treat swollen feet. You can’t get much further from the eyes than that 🙂
Hemp-Agrimony
I like it:) Looks tough and it’s so pretty.

Did you know some people build houses made from hemp? I didn’t until I found one on a walk a few years back.

P.S. The only thing I’d consider smoking are my rear tyres, but most of the time they get very gentle treatment.

It’s in flower here too. It looks too sure of itself to be a wild flower – good enough to grow in the garden.

Thanks Clare 🙂 It is very good for attracting insects, especially Butterflies.

It looks a bit like Eutrochium purpureum (formerly Eupatorium purpureum) – Joe Pye Weed here in the US. Since it’s been reclassified, I guess they aren’t related.

Thanks Eliza 🙂 The short answer is that they are related. They belong to the same “Tribe” Eupatorieae which is a subdivision of the family Asteraceae. Within that tribe Eupatorium and Eutrochium are closely linked.
