Fred (The Barn Swallow)

I have had to modify my plans a bit for today. It is beautiful and sunny outside and I am stuck indoors.

There are amazing things going on in my kitchen cupboard.

Anyway I decided to take a break from pacing back and forth and I stood outside to feel the warmth of the sun and Fred lit down on the gate just feet in front of me. He waited while I  took his picture and then he sang a little song for me.

    1. Thanks Sandi 🙂 They are pretty much the same size. Barn Swallow 15-20 cm length, Eastern Bluebird 16-21 cm. I have never seen an Eastern Bluebird and had to look that up. They are pretty little things 🙂

      1. Hi Colin,
        I’ve never seen a Barn Swallow. The Eastern Bluebird is very common in the South. We encourage them by providing food and shelter, so they share their lives with us in our yard. They are very protective and will dive at people or critters that come too close to their nest. We also have Blacksnakes and Copperheads that get in the birdhouses and eat the babies. I hate when that happens! We’ve gotten several out of the birdhouses, but always too late. I looked up Forest Dean. Breathtaking! You are truly blessed to live in such a beautiful country!     1. Thanks Debra 🙂 I use a Panasonic FZ200 bridge camera although some of the pictures that I post are from earlier models. It is a relatively cheap camera, much cheaper than DSLR. Fortunately I have a symbiotic relationship with animals and plants, we are mutually beneficial (kind to each other) 🙂

    Can’t seem to get enough of your camera–all at just the right angles to catch his best face forward. Or sideways.

    1. Thanks Elouise 🙂 It was unusual for him to pose like that but it was a blistering hot day and I think he was just enjoying the sunshine and too lazy to move.

  8. Colin I can only echo all the other compliments. Fred is simply wonderful and your photos are super. In my next life I think I’d quite like to come back as a swallow.
