I thought that we should have some pictures of the larvae of the Peacock Butterfly and given how easy it would be for me to obtain these images….it would be a crime not to do it.
So I invited a baby Peacock outside for a photo shoot.
My beautiful little animals are going a bit nuts at the moment, they keep trying to escape. They are quite big and I am not sure if they have got another moult in them or if they are ready to pupate. I have caterpillar proofed my cupboard with many more sheets of paper and I am keeping them well fed but they seem determined to wander 🙂
I was wondering, if you touch them accidentally, will you get some skin reaction ? Are they poisonous or irritant ?

Hi Gin, thanks for the comment and I am sorry it has taken me so long to reply but it was such a nice day today 🙂 Some people seem to get skin reactions from everything so I couldn’t really say it won’t happen but these are not especially bad. They sometimes crawl on me and I have never noticed any reaction. Generally it is the other way round. Caterpillars are fragile little things and the oils on our skin can harm them. I avoid handling them a much as possible. When they escape I have to coax them onto a leaf to put them back 🙂

Oh, I see. Better be careful not to harm them then. Thank you for your answer !

It is always interesting to read your posts. I wonder, may be they just need something you don’t have to move to the next stage of their development?

Thanks Inese 🙂 They seem to be developing very quickly. They eat an awful lot of Nettles. I think I am becoming immune to the pain that comes from gathering their breakfast. They don’t seem to sting so much now.

This morning a whole bunch of them have suspended themselves from the roof of the cupboard and two of them are now bright green chrysalis’s. Fizz is whining in the garden but my video camera is on them. I really want to film this transformation. Could be my next post. It is too hot out for Fizz, I will take her out later 🙂

Baby peacocks remind me of a constellation of stars.
I’ve raised silk moths from eggs before, they were also voracious eaters. Big pooers too.
